Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxiii Departmental Notes For the third successive year two West European students have held Ford Foundation scholarships in the Department Mr de Bruyn from Holland who successfully completed the degree and Mr van den Dungen from Belgium whose progress has been such that he is to be granted third year in which to complete Ph degree Dr Colin Gray working on book to be entitled Strategic Studies Past Present and Future financed by the Ford Foundation has been attached to the Department this session Colonel Hickey of the Army Air Corps has spent year in the Department as Defence Fellow the fourth working on 'Battlefield aerial vehicles in support of land operations' Professor Martin has lectured to the Joint Staff Colleges the Royal Naval College Greenwich the National Defence College the NATO Defence College at Rome and was the guest speaker at the 25 th Anniversary celebration at the Northern Command of NATO at Oslo He took part in Colloquium on 'Policy and Power in the United States' at the Institute of United States Studies was staff member of four-week National Security Seminar at Colorado Springs in the United States and attended the IISS Conference at the University of Sussex He has been elected to the Council of the IISS and is now member of the Army Education Advisory Board Dr Mendl has lectured on various aspects of Japan to Defence Studies Courses at the University of Southampton to StaffPromotion Courses at the University of Bristol to the Royal Naval College Greenwich to the Strategic Studies Group at UCW Aberystwyth and on 'National Security in changing world' to the Essex County Emergency Planning Study Conference He read papers on Sino-Japanese relations to Graduate Seminar at LSE to Staff Seminar at UCW Aberystwyth and to the Contemporary China Institute at SOAS He talked to Radley College VI Form about the Middle East On August 18th he gave the Swarthmore Lecture at the Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends York Mr Bond has twice lectured to the United States Naval War College at Newport Rhode Island and to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to Reading University and the Cambridge University Modern History Club He has been appointed editor of War and Society the Journal of Military History Dr Dockrill has lectured at the University of Surrey and at Ports-
