Annual Report of the Delegacy DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH AND SPANISH AMERICAN STUDIES Numbers of Students King's Other College Colleges Subsidiary 12 Spanish 35 10 MILARS 10 Combined Studies History Postgraduate 21 11 Departmental Notes Although it might be thought to be satisfactory that numbers should remain constant at time when recruitment raises problems in so many quarters there is no cause for complacency There is some tendency for Spanish as an level subject to be dropped by some schools and all members of the Department are conscious of the need to make the case for the study of Spanish as major language of the world Professor Harvey took over as Head of Department at the beginning of the session His major research interests are in the field of Hispano-Arabic studies Without in any way abandoning its interests in other fields the Department is glad in this way to extend its coverage of Hispanic phenomena The Library of Queen Mary College very generously transferred number of books on Hispano- Arabic studies to King's to enable Professor Harvey's work to continue without interruption At the end of the session Mrs Rita Hamilton retired after almost thirty years as member of the lecturing staff and an association with the College which goes back even further Generations of students have loved her and respected her The department was able to mark her departure by presentation of books and of electronic sound equip- ment in which nearly two hundred students had joined She will be much missed It had been hoped that volume of Studies in honour of Rita Hamilton could be presented to her by colleagues from this and other universities at about the same time As result of delays in the final stages of
