lxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Numbers of Students Subsidiary Honours 94 Postgraduate 16 Departmental Notes In his capacity as General Secretary and rapporteur Professor Koenigsberger attended the annual conference of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions The theme was 'Rulers and Charters' and the meetings were held at the Max-Planck-Institut-fiir-Geschichte in Gottingen from September 4th to 7th Dr Duggan participated in 11 Congresso Internazionale sul Tema Fonti Medioevali Problematica Storiografica' on the occasion of the ninetieth anniversary of the foundation of the Istituto Storico Italiano in Rome in October Dr Brown lectured at Leicester Polytechnic and at St Mary's College Twickenham and appeared on French television ORTV He also attended the seventh Chateau-Gaillard Conference on European Castle Studies Dr Marshall delivered papers on 'Sir William Jones and Oriental Studies at Oxford in the Eighteenth Century' to the Seminar on 'Oxford and the World of Letters in the Eighteenth Century' at Oxford and on 'Economic and Political Expansion the Case of Oudh' to the Study Group on 'Society and War India 1795-1808' at the School of Oriental and African Studies DEPARTMENT OF PALAEOGRAPHY Departmental Notes The number of students attending classes declined steeply to thirty-six partly because the Phil students at the Warburg Institute decided to wait until their second year and partly because the Birkbeck College in Medieval Studies produces candidates in Palaeography only every other year Eleven candidates were taught and examined four in Classics three in English and four in History Twenty-five research students also attended classes one in English twelve from the
