lxiv Annual Report of the Delegacy the aesthetic movement' at the Aesthetic Movement Symposium at the Camden Arts Centre in Hampstead Mr Proudfoot was Visiting Lecturer in the University of Virginia in the Michaelmas term of 1973 He attended an inter- national conference on 'Modern methods and problems of editing' at the Villa Serbelloni in September 1973 and read paper on 'Types of edition of English plays of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries' He attended the annual conference on editing at the University of Toronto in November 1973 and lectured at the University of New Brunswick on 'Editing Shakespearean Plays' and on 'The Shakespeare Apocrypha' in December 1973 Mrs Christine Rees gave an intercollegiate lecture on 'Definitions of love in Restoration drama' Mrs Jane Roberts gave an intercollegiate lecture on Ά historical Thesaurus of English' Miss Janet Cowen Mr Proudfoot and Mrs Jane Roberts attended the Conference of University Teachers of English held in Dublin in the Easter vacation On the occasion of the Old Students' Association Reception on May 10th the Department held an open day with demonstrations of tape recordings records and slides used for the teaching of Early English The Department's continuing interest in drama was realised this year in very successful performance of George Peele's Old Wives' Tale during the lunch hour on June 25th This was produced by Proudfoot and Hill Miss Janet Cowen who acted in this play also played leading role in the rarely produced Middle English plays of the Burial and Resurrection from MS Bodley Museo 160 in Southwark Cathedral DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH Number of Students Undergraduate 97 Postgraduate 14 In addition 27 students were spending the year in France as Assistants Departmental Notes Professor Cocking was re-elected Vice-Dean of the University Faculty of Arts Dr Landers directed and took part in course arranged by the
