UNIVERSITY OF LONDON KING'S COLLEGE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DELEGACY FOR THE SESSION 1973-74 Presented to the Court and Senate of the University of London PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS It has not in the past been the practice in this Institution as it is in many others for the head of it to make at some time in the academic year public statement on matters of interest This is happening here in University of London King's College for the first time think today What is now in my mind is to offer some observations on the general character of education in University to accompany these with some reflections on what happens here in King's in this context to give some- thing of factual report on where we seem to be now and in what direction we might be moving and to mention one or two other matters of interest Where what is said is opinion rather than fact the opinion is mine alone Let us accept that the purpose of University is the increase and spread of learning If so what in the second role should be taught in it to undergraduate students and how should this be done wider question arises there what can University offer to young people and why should they come to it at all University can offer three things It can give help in the earning of living it can give person an opportunity to develop as person and it can increase awareness of the world in which that person will have to live For very many the first benefit the development of means of livelihood is of paramount importance and for some students it is the only one they identify The mainly vocational disciplines in Law in Medicine in Engineering for example exist to meet clear and pressing national need and at the same time to prepare young men and women for attractive arduous and rewarding careers But even those xxiii
