xviii Annual Report of the Council controlled by the Senate of the University through the Delegacy of King's College the other controlled by the Council through the Theological Committee Moreoever it laid down Green Book 53 the Corporation of the College shall continue the same body Cor- porate as theretofore' the Appointed Day 1910 Its membership however was altered 11 The Corporation and its executive the Council were preserved by the 1908 Act and it is they who are still the Trustees of the original Grant and they who are charged with maintaining the original pur- poses for which the College was founded These original purposes had nothing to do with the training of ordinands the Faculty of Theology and the Diploma were not established until 1846 but they were and still are to provide College in which instruction in the duties and doctrines of Christianity shall be for ever combined with other branches of useful Education Green Book 12 line 31 Regarded in this way the Act of 1908 under which the College is still governed was skilful if complicated measure necessary in its time and circumstances to retain under the direct control of Council the Christian and Anglican aspect of the original purposes while ensuring that the Other branches of useful Education' were maintained in the same building at the expense of the University under arrangements which provided one Principal one Dean one Secretary and joint meetings of both Governing Bodies and Professional Boards The Proposals Principles That should cease to be incorporated in the Uni- versity of London and new Charter should be sought That the Theological Department and as at present constituted should cease to exist That the Corporation should be retained with membership altered as expedient as Trustees of the Grant of 1829 That by these measures the original unity of King's College can be re-established and seen openly to be re-established with the consequential advantages of freedom and simplicity Constitutional Aspects The King's College London Transfer Act 1908 should be repealed to the extent necessary
