Annual Report of the Council xvii 'if the said building shall be applied to or used for any other purpose whatsoever than College in which instructions in the duties and doctrines of Christianity shall be for ever combined with other branches of useful education The Charter of King's College London of August 14th 1829 states why the Charter was given in identical words Green Book 16 line 30 We being desirous of maintaining indissolubly the connection between sound religion and useful learning and highly approving the design of instituting College in which instruction in the doctrines and duties as taught by the United Church of England and Ireland shall be for ever combined with other branches of useful education do grant constitute and declare The same Charter established the corporation Green Book 17 and the council Green Book 19 The Act of 1882 Green Book pp 28-36 annulled the Charter but it did not affect the Grant of the Site and decreed that the College should continue as body politic and corporate The Act of 1882 has not been repealed and the Corporation and Council remain today The King's College London Transfer Act of 1908-signi- ficantly to amend the King's College London Act of 1882 Green Book pp 8-63 -is long and complicated document Its purpose was while preserving the unity of the College consistently with the Charter and the Grant to transfer from the Council to the broader shoulders of the University the administrative and financial burdens of supporting and developing all the teaching Faculties other than Theology which was to be carried on in the Theological Department with new officer the Dean of King's College at its head By the Act of 1908 the Corporation granted lease of 999 years to the University Green Book 46 it did not transfer to the University the Head Lease and further the Act reasserts the Proviso Green Book 51 of the right of re-entry by the Crown which is contained in the Grant of June nth 1829 The Act of 1908 did not create two Colleges out of one indeed there are many provisions in the Act directed to maintaining the unity continuity and purposes of the College 10 The Act of 1908 established two branches of the College-one
