Faculties and Courses of Study 155 COURSES FOR MUS DEGREE The course for the Mus degree extends over three years The Final examination is taken at the end of the third year The regulations for the Mus degree have been revised and changes came into force in October 1975 These affect only students embarking on the course at the time Those who were by then beginning their second or third year continue in accordance with existing regulations PRELIMINARY MUS COURSE This is one-year course preparing students for the College's prelim- inary examination in Music which takes place at the end of the third term The subjects of the course are History of Music Aural Training Repertory and Style Melody Harmony and Counterpoint FINAL MUS COURSE candidate for admission to the Final examination for the degree of Mus under the old regulations will have passed the old Preliminary examination at least three terms but not more than two years prev- iously and will have matriculated at least nine terms previously The subjects for the Final examination are as follows History of Instruments and their Use Twentieth-century Music Two Prescribed Periods of European Music with set works Two Special Subjects to be selected by the candidate and viva voce examination which may include practical test The Faculty considers it important that under- graduates should acquire wide experience and knowledge of music and that they should extend their powers of original independent and sustained thought through their musical studies Instruction will be by means of lectures tutorials discussion groups and seminars Under- graduates in their first and second years will be required to attend course of lectures without examination in subject other than music and to continue study of their instruments usually at the Guildhall School of Music REVISION OF MUS REGULATIONS Under the revised regulations the Preliminary examination has ceased to exist and the three-year course is divided into two parts The course of study for Part extends over six terms and is conducted by School- sponsored syllabus that for Part II extends over three terms with University examination at the end of the year which consists of five
