Annual Report of the Delegacy Departmental Notes This has been full year in all senses with student numbers at capacity it is gratifying to record that in this case 'more' did not mean 'worse' The Department was fortunate in having Professor Burley of McMaster University for two terms as Visiting Professor and in the presence on an exchange basis of Dr Coates of George Wash- ington University Washington Both are old students who have been long away from the Department and they brought refreshing new ideas Other visitors to the Department included Professor Timofeev of the Academy of Sciences and Dr Bharadwaj of the Birbal Sahni Institute Lucknow India Professor Prentice continued to serve on the Council of the Geo- logical Society and was Chairman of its Education Committee he continued also as Chairman of the Scientific and Educational Sub- committee of the Field Studies Council and as founder member of the Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences on 'Geoscience and Man' He attended conferences on 'Groundwater Pollution' at Reading and 'Roadstones' at Bristol He took the Chair at Schools Examination Council Subject Conference on the Teaching of Geology in March and was invited speaker and guest of honour at Redland Ltd Conference in May He was elected Vice-Dean of the Science Faculty for the session 1973-74 Professor Howie was re-elected Vice-President of the Geological Society and Principal Editor of Mineralogical Abstracts He was appointed Chairman of the College Accommodation Committee and continued to serve as Chairman of the Board of Staff Examiners for Sc Stds II III and Part II General During the past academic year Dr Hancock has been Visiting Professor at the George Washington University Washington and Research Collaborator of the Smithsonian Institution He gave invited lectures to the Paleontological Society of Washington the Institute of Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology of the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Alberta He received grant from to allow him to carry out extensive field work in North America Dr Jones attended the meeting of the Palaeontological Associa- tion at Oxford and read paper he also attended the field meeting of the same Association at Grange-over-Sands He was appointed deputy chairman of the External Board in Geology of the University
