Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxix Robertson read paper to the Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group Dr Satchell lectured at the University of Reading Dr Robinson at the University of Leicester and at Royal Holloway and Queen Mary College and Dr Nicholas at Royal Holloway College Professor Gold assumed additional responsibilities on the Council of the Chemical Society on being appointed to the Council of the Perkin Division and to the Perkin Transactions Committee Professor Robertson was re-elected Chairman of the Board of Studies in Chem- istry He was Titular Member of the Commission on Analytical Nomenclature of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and member of the Analytical Chemistry Sub-Committee of the British National Committee for Chemistry Dr Crooks joined us as lecturer at the beginning of the session Academic appointments made during the year to take effect in October are that of Dr Reese as Daniell professor in place of Dr Baldwin who returned to his post at early in the session and of Dr Thomas as lecturer Because of Professor Baldwin's resignation the Department was short-staffed for almost the entire teaching year and much of the additional burden fell on Dr Davies and the lecturers in organic chemistry We are also indebted to Professor Whalley Dr Midgely and Dr Collins of the School of Pharmacy for helping out at very short notice by giving Professor Baldwin's specialist third-year lectures on natural product chemistry Because of these teaching problems it was particularly gratifying to find that the Department's Sc degree results in 1973 were the best for many years with eight first-class Honours degrees DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY Number of Students Sc with Geology as major subject 44 Sc degree Geology Geography 11 Geology Chemistry Geology Physics Subsid Geology to Hons Geography Sc Engineering 24 Postgraduates incl part-time Geology as minor subject Bedford Coll Chelsea Coll Univ Coll 45
