Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxvii DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY Number oj Students Sc Main subject 94 Sc Biochemistry 22 Sc Joint Honours 26 Sc Biological Sciences Geology and Physics 93 Graduate Certificate in Education Ed Postgraduate Research 26 part-time Postdoctoral Research 14 288 part-time Departmental Notes Two new developments in the Department's teaching programme were initiated during the Session First in collaboration with the Faculty of Education the Department accepted the first group of students for the new Ed degree in Science Education Chemistry The second in- novation was lecture course on Chemistry of the Environment This proved highly successful and popular both with students of Chemistry and also with large number from other scientific departments Both ventures will be continued on regular basis It is pleasure to report that the Department's distinction in research is finding increasing recognition in the form of various outside grants most significantly in the number of strictly competitive research grants from the Science Research Council During the Session these have supported specific projects on radiation-induced aliphatic hydrogen exchange on hydride transfer to organic molecules and on catalysis at polymer surfaces Professor Gold on infrared magnetic circular dichroism studies and on vibrational Cotton effects in the infrared involving the construction in the Department of an infrared circular dichroism spectrometer Professor Mason on catalytic reactions on metal surfaces and on the development of field ionisation mass spectro- metry Professor Robertson on group VIII metal complexes Dr Robinson on metal fluoride solutions in acetic acid Dr Emsley and on the kinetics of interphase solute transfer in emulsions Dr Crooks An intercollegiate postgraduate lecture course on newer techniques in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy made use of closed-circuit
