Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxiii FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF BIOPHYSICS Number of Students Undergraduates Total attending the 10 courses given by the Department 147 Postgraduates Total attending the postgraduate course given by the Department 14 Total reading for Ph or Phil 22 Attached Research Workers In addition to the 14 members of scientific staff of the two Units 16 postdoctoral scientists worked in the Department Departmental Notes Professor Jean Hanson died suddenly in August 1973 at the age of 53 This is tragic loss to the Department Professor Hanson joined the Medical Research Council Biophysics Unit in 1947 She was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1967 and was made honorary Professor of Biology in 1966 Professor Hanson contributed considerably to the teaching of the Department and to the organisation of the School of Biological Sciences since its inception in 1965 She became Director of the Medical Research Council Muscle Biophysics Unit in 1971 The Department has lost an extremely valuable member of staff as result of Dr Watson Fuller resigning his Readership to become Head of the Physics Department at Keele University Dr Fuller worked in the Department since 1957 making considerable contributions to both teaching and research He was much involved in the close links in teaching between the Physics Department and the Biophysics Depart- ment but it is intended that these links be maintained Professor Wilkins lectured at the Winter Meeting of the British Biophysical Society the Harden Conference of the Biochemical Society and at various Universities Dr Richards and Dr Spencer Research Fellow have joined the Department staff Dr Richards being appointed College Lecturer Mr John Cribbin has been appointed Administrative Assistant on the resignation of Mr Flack
