lxxii Annual Report of the Delegacy begun within the postgraduate Mus seminar on Musical Analysis under the direction of Dr Ian Bent the programming being done with- in the Music Faculty An initial pattern-matching routine was developed which operated direct on the data field routines have now been devel- oped for matrix sorting and string matching and the project will go forward to rewriting and higher-level pattern matching and the recognition of equivalence classes basic library of computer studies in music is now being established in the Faculty of Music including programming manuals and other fundamental reference works as well as articles and books on the computer and music Professor Howard Mayer Brown has been appointed Alexander White Professor-at-large Cornell University Ithaca from 1972- 76 He lectured at Cornell during April 1973 He has been appointed area editor for Grove's Dictionary of Music Musicians 6th edition Dr Brian Trowell has been re-appointed to the visiting post of Gresham Professor of Music in the City of London Dr Ian Bent has been appointed Text Editor for Grove's Dictionary of Music Musicians 6th edition He gave two lectures The Sequence from Notker to Hildegard' and 'The Isorhythmic Motet' at the Medieval Renaissance Latin Course held at King's College Mr Davitt Moroney mus read the closing paper entitled 'Divin- ity in Odd Numbers' at the 25th annual conference of the Institute of Statisticians held at King's College Cambridge The paper was about mathematics and music and in particular numerical expressions in late medieval music of some religious doctrines The Faculty of Music acted as host to the second Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Music held at Cumberland Lodge July 13th-16th 1973 The Conference Organiser was Dr Ian Bent Some 70 scholars from Britain the and Europe attended most of them senior scholars but with graduate students and professional musicians as well The Faculty received further generous contributions to the William Byrd Fund during the Session
