Annual Report of the Delegacy lxvii meetings of the Biochemical Society In July 1973 he attended the 9th International Congress of Biochemistry in Stockholm and took part in the Council meetings of the International Union of Biochemistry and the Federation of European Biochemical Societies He was re-elected Secretary-General of Dr Darbre gave an invited lecture at one-day Symposium on 'Gas Chromatography in Food Analysis' which was held on February 22nd 1973 at the Polytechnic of the South Bank and also at meeting of the Institute of Petroleum Gas Chromatography Discussion Group on May 24th 1973 Having been awarded Wellcome Travelling Fellowship by the Medical Research Council Dr Cannon was given leave of absence to work in the Department of Biochemistry University of Wisconsin from September 1972 to August 1973 Dr Kogut contributed an invited paper to symposium on antibiotics at the 1st International Congress of Bacteriology which was held in Jerusalem in September 1973 She has been awarded Nuffield Foundation grant for study of The evolution of new curricula and teaching methods in basic sciences for medical schools' which will enable her to visit seven medical schools in the United States and Canada as well as various medical schools in Britain At the end of July Dr Stevens left the Department to take up an appointment as Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at the University of Stirling As in previous years the Department has been awarded several major research grants including £18 443 by the Science Research Council to Professor Arnstein and Dr Kogut for an investigation of 'Regulatory processes during development of erythroid bone marrow cells' £11 211 by the Medical Research Council to Dr Spencer for investiga- tion on 'Characteristics of protein synthesis during erythroblast development' and £21 100 by the Science Research Council to Dr Chesterton for project on 'Control of eukaryotic gene expression polymerase-mediated regulation of haemoglobin mRNA synthesis' These grants provide welcome and much needed additional support but it is matter for concern that funds now cover only comparatively small part of the cost of research Moreover inflationary increases in equipment maintenance charges and other essential recurrent expenditure are creating serious problems and may soon have adverse effects on the continuation of research at an ad- vanced level
