lx Annual Report of the Delegacy visited the department Among these may be mentioned Professor Castangna Director of the Institute of Machines and Technology at the University of Rome Professor Trbojevic and Professor Krsmanovic of the University of Belgrade Professor Matsumura of the Hosei University at Tokyo and Professor Arama of the Technical High School Bucharest Professor Arama made his visit especially memorable by giving most interesting lecture on the special problems of Diesel engine exhaust pollution encountered in Romania In the latter part of last year the Institution of Mechanical Engineers published an important report on the Development of Mechanical Engineers Professor Kastner was member of the working party whose deliberations over long period led to the preparation of this report and the department is glad to have been associated with project which should in the words of Lord Stokes of Leyland 'serve as catalyst for liaison between academics and industrialists' During May of this year the Joint Academics Industrialists Com- mittee in Internal Combustion Engineering held meeting in the College and number of distinguished industrial engineers lectured to postgraduate students and staff Professor Rose visited Jugoslavia and gave lectures at the Universities of Zagreb Ljubljana and Belgrade Professor Rose Dr English and Dr Moore delivered series of six public lectures in the College during the period February-March 1973 the subject being 'Recent Developments in Powder Technology' Dr Williams visited several university and industrial research etsablishments in the and lectured on 'Engine Cylinder Swirl and Turbulence' at the University of Wisconsin at the Technical Centre Detroit and at the Cummins Technical Centre Columbus Indiana He also visited the University of Nigerai Nsukka as External Examiner in Mechanical Engineering Dr Smith was elected Corporate Member of the Institution of Corrosion Technology Work has proceeded during the year on the researches described in last year's report In the field of refrigeration contacts have been made with Birds Eye Foods Ltd in connection with the project concerned with heat losses through cold store doors It is hoped that these new contacts may have fruitful results The research into the performance of two-step evaporators is also continuing as well as studies of the efficiency of fins The study of air movements in the nozzleless volutes of small radial turbines has continued and progress has been made with improved methods of hot wire anemometry which should enable explorations
