Ivi Annual Report of the Delegacy working under the leadership of Dr White We look forward to having him with us again next year In February 1973 Dr White received grant of £5 072 from the National Environment Research Council for work we are doing on Modelling of Hydrological Systems by the Finite Element Method He presented paper to the International Conference on Numerical Methods in Fluid Dynamics at Southampton University in September 1973 grant amounting to £27 464 was received by the Concrete group from the Science Research Council for work on 'Environmental effects of the movements and stresses in concrete and concrete struc- tures' In this field Dr Illston Dr Dougill and Dr England have had the continuing advice of Professor Ross whose regular presence in the Department has been greatly appreciated Dr Illston attended the Concrete Research Conference in Cannes in October 1972 and presented paper he also presented paper to an Institute of Physics meeting on Properties of Building Materials at Cambridge in September 1973 Dr Dougill and Dr England also presented papers at this meeting Dr Illston lectured at the Cement and Concrete Association to courses on 'Advanced Concrete Technology' and 'Movements in Concrete' Dr England attended the International Symposium on Chimney Design in Edinburgh in April 1973 and the 2nd International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology in Berlin in September 1973 and presented papers to them both further grant has been awarded to the group led by Dr Dougill who are working on the strain softening of concrete rock and soil Dr Dougill presented two papers to the rd International Con- ference on Fracture in Munich in April 1973 and chaired one of the discussion sessions He continued to work with the Concrete Society's working party on Fire Resistance and the American Concrete Institute's Committees 209 and 206 which deal with this subject He is serving on the joint Committee of the Concrete Society and the Institution of Structural Engineers concerned with design for fire resistance Professor Gibson became Chairman of the Editorial Panel of the quarterly journal 'Geotechnique' and served as External Examiner in Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol and the University of Zambia Professor Nash serves as Chairman of the Board of Moderators in Civil Engineering of the Council of Engineering Institutions Dr Bassett delivered paper to the North-Eastern Region of
