Annual Report of the Delegacy lv Faculty Notes Civil Engineering The graduates emerging from the Sc Eng course this year were the first under the new regulations with Course Units These allow quite measure of option within range of Engineering topics and even the possibility of taking small number of non- engineering subjects Thus one student took course in music and passed with an excellent mark During the year Dr Evans of the University of Washington spent year in the Department as visiting Lecturer thus forging closer link with that University where one of our old students Colin Brown is Professor of Civil Engineering Dr Evans joined in the Department's research efforts and his seminars were greatly valued by staff and research students In particular he worked closely with Dr Dougill whose titular readership was announced during the year During the year seminars were also given by Dr Pihlajavaara of the State Institute for Technical Research Finland on Moisture and Movement in Cement Paste by Mr Parrott of the Cement and Concrete Association on Thermogravimetric Analyses of Cement Paste and by Professor van Olphen of the National Academy of Sciences Washington on Clay-Water Systems and applications in Engineering and Geology Professor Nash delivered the opening address to the British Geo- technical Society's symposium in London on Field Instrumentation in May 1973 He also delivered the opening address to the Annual Session of the Institution of Engineers Ceylon at their three-day conference in Colombo in September 1973 and gave Public Lecture and other specialist lectures there to the Institution and to the University of Peradeniya The Department was well represented at the 8th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in Moscow in August Professor Gibson and Dr Bassett presented papers and Professor Nash who is Secretary General of the Society was there in an official capacity These conferences take place every four years and are increasing in importance some 950 engineers from 50 countries were present Sir Norman Rowntree who is Senior Vice-President of the Institu- tion of Civil Engineers and Director of the Water Resources Board was appointed Visiting Professor in the Department His advice is greatly valued by the staff and in particular by the hydrology group
