xxxvi Annual Report oj the Delegacy progress of the erection of new building known as 'Stage 11 A' parts of which will house Union facilities Some will mourn the un- dignified death of the Chesham but with more students arriving every year and living standards being higher we welcome our new home with all the improvements which it will bring The first great event which took place this year as every year in time-honoured tradition was the march around the Aldwych for Freshers with the Lady Vice-President enthroned upon 'Reggie' borne by the Engineers We again took part in the Lord Mayor's Show and paraded through the streets of the City of London on November nth The King's float was lifeboat filled with students dressed appropriately for their faculties and societies 'Reggie' was also present The whole event was voted great success and it was said to be the best student effort for many years Later in the year the Lord Mayor visited the College this visit proving to be one of the outstanding social events of the past session Commemoration Week was great success with slightly different flavour from usual This featured formal opening ceremony in the Great Hall at which two guests of honour the Archduke and Duchess of Ruritania the Deputy President and second year medical student presided Commemoration was opened by the Principal cutting the cake with his sword borne in on velvet cushion by Mr Amos the Head Porter The Oration given by Lord Hailsham the Lord Chancellor was very stimulating and we eagerly await the written work Other successful events included concerts both classical and modern plays films and other entertaining items The crown of the week of course was the Ball again held at Quaglino's Piccadilly This was great success and greatly enjoyed by all present Another innovation this year was the Arts Festival During the ten days of the festival an exhibition was on show in the Council Room consisting of modern art photography and sculpture In the Great Hall was series of paintings by the famous Australian artist Sydney Nolan It is hoped that this event will become regular feature of our social programme Elections and various administrative matters seem to be the main concern during the Lent Term but the Lady Vice-President organised Charities Week to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Child- ren's Hospital and 'Help the Aged' There are also other various fund-
