xxxiv Annual Report of the Delegacy ROGATE FIELD CENTRE Report by the Warden The Field Centre has had very full year and there have been number of new visitors to Rogate Increased use of the Centre has been made by both King's College and other organisations The num- ber of overnight stays increased from 675 to 245 King's College visitors and from 859 to 3261×™ for other users Although there were staff shortages at the beginning of the year the Centre continued to accept visitors and is now accepting bookings from King's College and other colleges up to year in advance By encouraging non-scientific courses the Centre was able to use the less popular winter months for discussion and conference weekends and this has been helped by the acquisition of new lecture room which was transferred from one of the college halls In general the Centre is able to accommodate large proportion of prospective visitors although the present maximum of 40 is limiting factor The existing kitchen with some minor alterations will cope with up to 60 meals an increase of 50 per cent but the dining room would need to be extended to cope with any increase in numbers Similarly an extension of the dormitory area would be needed to accommodate larger courses The Open Day this year was held on March 15th 1973 and attrac- ted great deal of interest both locally and from the home counties Four papers were given in the morning by post-graduate and post- doctoral research workers at Rogate these covered aspects of air pollution history of the chalk soil river sediment transport and small mammal social olfaction The papers were followed by discussion and questions During the afternoon the Centre was opened to visitors who showed great interest in the various displays which demonstrated some facets of the current research projects being carried out at Rogate Throughout the year there has also been series of seminars held at the Centre and these have proved very useful to the resident post- graduates who gave them as well as attracting people from other universities and private organisations The grounds of the Centre are now being fully used for teaching and research work and small lake is being constructed to assist with biological studies of freshwater habitats The Field Centre continues to maintain cordial relationship with the village and members of the Centre participate in many of the local activities
