xxxii Annual Report of the Delegacy were items from libraries abroad In addition 257 items were borrowed direct from academic libraries in the United Kingdom and 95 from other libraries in Britain total of 205 items was lent to other libraries 103 being to academic libraries and 96 to other libraries in the United Kingdom and to libraries abroad 11 The Library Committee was pleased to have the opportunity to take up institutional membership of the Friends of Lambeth Palace Library which already rendered valuable services to the departments of English History and Palaeography as well as to the Faculty of Theology at King's Military archives 12 The negotiations for the acquisition of the military library and archives collected by the late Sir Basil Liddell Hart were brought to successful conclusion The collection will remain for the time being under the care of Lady Liddell Hart at her home in Buckinghamshire but will eventually be brought to the Strand to be integrated into the existing Centre for Military Archives which is henceforth to be known as the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives and of which the collection will form the central and most important element Con- tributions towards the purchase price of the collection have already been received or promised from the Wolfson Foundation the Friends of the National Libraries and Canadian benefactor 13 During the year under review the Centre received further papers of Lieutenant General Sir Humphry Gale given by his daughter further papers of Brigadier General Lord Montagu of Beaulieu de- posited by the present Lord Montagu papers of General Sir Neville Littelton given by Susan Lady Tweedsmuir and papers of Major General Sir Frederick Maurice the first occupant of the chair of military studies established at King's in 1927 given by Lady Spears 14 Twenty-nine persons were newly admitted to read papers in the Centre photo-copies were supplied on loan to ten readers and approval was given for the publication or submission for higher degrees of nine manuscripts in which use had been made of papers in the Centre Staff 15 During the year the Librarian continued to represent the College Library at the meetings of the Standing Conference of National and University Libraries of the Standing Conference of Librarians of the
