Annual Report of the Delegacy xxi Delegacy His Chairmanship of the Joint Recruiting Board of the University of London was recognised by the conferment of the in 1960 but probably the office for which he will be most gratefully remembered will be as Sub-Dean of Science which he held from 1946 to December 1969 His work here was of outstanding value the knowledge and experience he gained-and was ever ready to place at others' disposal made him in effect one of the elder Statesmen of the College This was recognised in 1970 when on his retirement he was invited by the Delegacy to be the first Adviser to Students-a position which he has filled with his customary skill sympathy and success Elected Fellow of the College in 1958 Mr Edwards is now leaving as the senior academic member of King's College The Delegacy owe him much and their gratitude is sincere They bid farewell to Mr Edwards confident in the knowledge that his unabated vigour and his wide interests will ensure many years of happy retirement for Mrs Edwards and himself Dr Mary Hackett phil Coming to King's College in 1955 as Reader in Romance Philology Dr Hackett brought to the Department of French the distinction of first class degrees at Manchester and Oxford and experience as teacher and warden of halls at St Andrews Throughout her time at King's Dr Hackett has consistently de- veloped both these qualities the scholarly and the pastoral In the former she has established her reputation as one of the leading experts in Romance Philology-in the latter she has earned the gratitude of postgraduates and undergraduates for whom no trouble has been too great for her and in whose studies and careers she has taken personal and lasting interest The Delegacy would record their thanks for Dr Hackett's many services and extend to her their best wishes for her retirement Resignations From the end of the session unless otherwise indicated Faculty of Arts Professor Jones Cervantes Professor of Spanish Mr Rogers Lecturer in English Professor Elliott Professor of History Faculty of Education Mr Hayes Lecturer
