xvi Annual Report of the Council the dean matthews' appeal on behalf of the maurice chair of moral and social theology year ago in November 1972 the Very Reverend Dr Matthews probably the College's most distinguished alumnus launched an appeal for the completion of the endowment for the Maurice Chair Dean Matthews with the greatest generosity gave the first donation of £1 000 During the past year great number of former King's students have responded to Dean Matthews' appeal and in the twelve months that have elapsed £18 155 has been received to date of this sum the great majority of contributions have come in the shape of small gifts which indicate the great affection in which Dean Matthews himself is held by generations of King's students With the gifts received as result of Dean Matthews' appeal the Maurice Endowment Fund is now standing at £86 740 The original target was for £100 000 The appeal is still open benefactions sum of £500 was received from the Castlehill Trust and is set aside for specific cases general The publication of the Report of the Committee of Enquiry into the Governance of the University of London under the chairmanship of Lord Murray of Newhaven pressed further the exploration of the future of the Council and the Theological Department begun at the residential conference in March 1972 of members of the Council and the Delegacy with external advisers The Delegacy and the Council invited Sir Richard Way to be Chairman of Joint Committee to study the constitutional implications for King's College of the recommendations of the Murray Report Printed in Great Britain by Richard Clay The Chaucer Press Ltd Bungay Suffolk
