124 Faculties and Courses of Study SUBSIDIARY COURSES Courses in the following subsidiary subjects are arranged by the appro- priate departments within the College Classical Greek English French German History Latin Modern Greek Music Philosophy Portuguese Spanish and Geology An Advanced level pass is necessary in the case of French German and Latin An Ordinary level pass is sufficient in the case of English History Spanish and Geology and desirable though not essential in Classical Greek and Music but in practice students reading English History or Spanish at subsidiary level have almost invariably passed the examination at Advanced level in the subject chosen For subsidiary Modern Greek an Ordinary level pass is required in either Modern Greek or Classical Greek For subsidiary Portuguese preference will be given to applicants who have prepared themselves by working through good Portuguese grammar such as those by Willis An Essential Course in Modern Portuguese Harrap or Ε Williams An Introductory Portuguese Grammar Appleton Century Crofts New York before arriving at the Univer- sity Applicants for subsidiary Philosophy will be tested by the depart- ment to ascertain their aptitude for the subject Music can be offered as subsidiary subject only by special arrangement In the case of the degree in Geography ancillary courses are organised on course unit' basis and arrangements are usually made after enrolment classes in subsidiary Statistics Economics Sociology or Anthropology are held at the nearby London School of Economics Courses in other subsidiary subjects are available at other London colleges but applicants should bear in mind the considerable loss of travelling time entailed by attend- ance at some of these courses and the possibility of time-table clashes between the honours and the subsidiary subjects during both the first and second years An Advanced level pass in Italian is preferred for subsidiary Italian which is taken at Birkbeck College students having only an Ordinary level pass take their subsidiary examination after three instead of two years An Advanced level pass in Russian is required for subsidiary Russian which is taken at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies Students reading subsidiary Portuguese are required as an integral and compulsory part of the subsidiary course under arrangements approved and supervised by the Department to spend total of eight weeks in Portugal normally during the first long vacation of the course
