Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxv Professor Domb had lectures in the universities of Reading Warwick and Southampton and Professor Wilkinson presented papers at conferences in Edinburgh Reims and Kingston Lectures were given by Dr Gaunt at the University of Brussels and at Queen Mary College and by Joyce at an international conference held in the University of Kent Drs Lightowlers Collins and Davies gave talks at conferences in Manchester Bristol Coleraine Schenectady New Hampshire and San Francisco Dr Griffiths Dr Edwards and other members of the nuclear group gave papers at conferences in Oxford Birmingham Aix en Provence Harwell University of Surrey Atomic Research Centre Bombay Flinders University Australia and Buda- pest Dr Ll Jones presented papers at international meetings in Oslo Warsaw and London department of zoology Number of Students Undergraduate Sc Zoology 24 Sc Zoology Botany 16 Total attending 12-course units run by the Department 212 Postgraduate 15 Postdoctoral Departmental Notes The session 1971-72 was marred by the tragic death of Dr Ian Healey on June 27th 1972 after an illness of six months The Department and the College have suffered grievous loss both academically and on the personal level Dr Healey was member of the Department for six years and during this time he had impressed both staff and students alike with his industry his novel approach and fertility of ideas to teaching and research in terrestrial ecology his critical ability and his farsighted- ness on scientific matters At an early age he had attained international recognition for his studies on the decomposition of wood and this was recognised in 1971 by his award of Smithsonian Fellowship which enabled him to undertake research in Panama Recently too he had been elected to the Council of the British Ecological Society We his colleagues will miss his wide-ranging scientific stimulation his forthrightness his joviality and his friendship
