lxxx Annual Report of the Delegacy Council of the Geological Society and Professor Howie was elected Vice-President of the Society Dr Hubbard continued as Council Member of the Palaeontological Association and assisted in the organi- sation of highly successful symposium on carbonate sedimentology for that Association Professor Prentice continued as Chairman of the Scien- tific and Educational Sub-Committee of the Field Studies Council and was elected to the foundation Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences on 'Geology and the Environment' Fieldwork will always be important to geology and it is gratifying to record successful independent field courses to South Wales North- umberland Anglesey Skye and the Forest of Dean In addition one day field courses have been enjoyed by the Lyell Club and the College field centre at Rogate has again proved very useful base The Lyell Club has had busy year with full series of lectures and field classes The Sixth annual Taylor Memorial Symposium entitled 'Problems of Biological Afinities in Extinct Fossil Groups' was held in February Professor Ī¤ George was in the chair and speakers included Professor Stormer Oslo Professor Dono- van Dr Downie Dr Jeiferies and Dr Scoffin It was at- tended by larger number of staif and students from universities DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS Number of Students Sc Special 56 Sc Joint Honours 61 Sc Ancillary 81 Sc Engineering 214 Postgraduate 39 Departmental Notes The Department moved into the New Strand Building in September 1971 Professor Taylor took up his position of Professor of Applied Mathematics in October Professor Frohlich gave postgraduate course in the University of London on quadratic and hermitian forms He addressed Colloquia in the Universities of London Oxford Leeds and Liverpool in the Eidge- nossische Technische Hochschule Zurich and in the mathematical Institutes of the Universities of Heidelberg and of Mainz Professor Frohlich was awarded an research grant for research project
