Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxix Departmental Notes In response to the increasing demand for earth scientists the Depart- ment has increased its numbers of undergraduates in both Geology and Joint Degrees although the increases are small they have reached what must surely be our physical limits It is satisfactory to report that judging by the degree results there has been no falling off in quality It is also noteworthy that despite the heavier load placed upon them research and other activities by the staff continues undiminished While current lines of interest continue much work has gone into the planning stages of new ventures notably the establishment of research centre for coastal sedimentology and ecology in East Africa and joint research programme with the Geological Survey of Iran Dr Richardson's grant from the Natural Environment Research Council for his studies in Palaeozoic palynology was renewed for further three years and additional microscopic equipment was pro- vided Extensive travel appears to be more and more part of geologist's life today Dr Richardson gave lecture course in Baton Rouge Louisiana in January and attended congress in Krefeld in October 1971 Dr Α Ε Hubbard presented papers to the Geological Society of America in Washington and to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and Society of Economic Paleon- tologists annual meeting in Denver Colorado in April she also spoke at Princeton University and the State University of New York at Binghampton Professor Prentice Dr Hubbard and Dr Hall attended the International Geological Congress in Montreal in August at which Drs Hubbard and Hall presented papers In their industrial advisory capacity both Professor Prentice and Mr Potter have spent some time in various parts of Western Europe and Professor Prentice has visited Saudi Arabia Dr Hubbard visited Kenya as con- sultant to marine environmental science training programme Mr Rowland conducted short course on Geological Labora- tory Techniques organised by the Inter-University Council at Fourah Bay College which included participants from Sierra Leone and Ghana He has also lectured in this country and gave the Annual Lecture of the Institute of Fire Engineers on the subject 'Hazards of Laboratory Fire Fighting' Professor Howie and Professor Prentice continued to serve on the
