Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxvii organic chemistry Dr Hall spent the session as Visiting Professor at Long Beach State College California and during his absence Dr Kennedy served in the Department on temporary basis At the end of the present session the Department will lose Dr Perkins whose appointment to Chair at another College is reported elsewhere He is the most recent addition to the remarkable number of distin- guished student and staff members of the Chemistry Department who have become Professors Dr Perkins' is the twentieth such professorial appointment within the last nine years Important developments in research are Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and kinetics of enzyme catalysis for both of which new equipment has come into operation grants have been announced for the support of new research projects by Professor Gold £9 586 Professor Baldwin £9 272 Professor Robert- son £9 420 Dr Perkins £10 562 and Dr Emsley £5 314 As member of the International Committee for Physical Organic Chemistry of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Professor Gold attended and chaired one of the main sessions of the First Conference on Physical Organic Chemistry at Crans-sur- Sierre Switzerland He read paper at the Autumn Meeting of the Chemical Society and gave lecture at the Polytechnic of Central London During the Spring term Professor Mason had short leave from the College to hold Nuffield lectureship in Canada during the tenure of which he gave lectures at the Universities of Alberta British Columbia California Berkeley Oregon Eugene and Southern California McGill University McMaster University Simon Frazer University and Victoria University In this country he lectured at the Univer- sities of Leicester Surrey and Warwick at Birkbeck College Chelsea College and St Paul's School to the British Society for the History of Science and to the King's College Maxwell Society He also gave three of the principal lectures at the Institute on Applications of Circular Dichroism and Optical Rotatory Dispersion at Pisa Professor Baldwin gave plenary lecture at the International Symposium on Organic Sulphur Chemistry held at the University of Lund Sweden Professor Baldwin also lectured at the Universities of Loughborough and Kent and at Imperial College Professor Robertson gave lectures at the Universities of Durham and Essex Professor Robertson was re-elected Chairman of the Board of
