lxxii Annual Report of the Delegacy amount of work he did both for University and College Music during what must have been the most turbulent 18 months the Faculty has ever known He read paper to the Royal Musical Association at its Annual Conference on 'Music and Broadcasting' All the problems of the Faculty have not been solved however by the appointment of Professor Brown The Faculty has scarcely room to breathe and additional or alternative accommodation is difficult to find The Faculty is however encouraged by the decision of the Development Planning Committee of the College to recommend that the Faculty be assigned the ground floor and the basement of the Music Building at 152-53 Strand It is hoped that funds may become available to convert these floors and to provide the essential under- pinning of the Faculty before the burden on the staff and the students becomes impossibly heavy The Faculty is convinced that it could become the leading Faculty of Music in this country if it were given breathing-space and the encouragement that the hub of British music scholarship deserves Dr Ian Bent read paper to the second Annual Conference of University Teachers in Music on 'Method in the teaching of under- graduate music history' He took part in discussion on 'Contempor- ary problems of musical style analysis' at the Conference of the Inter- national Music Society held in Copenhagen in August 1972 The Faculty received further generous contributions to the William Byrd Fund during the Session FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF BIOPHYSICS Number of Students Undergraduate Total attending the 10 courses given by the Department 140 Postgraduate Total attending the postgraduate course given by the Department 15 Total reading for Ph or Phil 27 Attached Research Workers In addition to the 16 members of scientific staff of the two Units 20 other postdoctoral scientists worked in the Department
