Annual Report of the Delegacy lxvii FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY Number of Students 2nd 248 2nd 63 Departmental Notes During the session Sir Francis Knowles was invited by the Science Research Council to be Chairman of their Biological Sciences Com- mittee and member of the Science Board for four-year period Dr Vollrath and Sir Francis have continued their research work on brain structures regulating pituitary gland function Grants awarded during the session by and the Science Research Council have made it possible to enlarge the research team purchase special freeze-drying apparatus and engage in active collaboration with workers in Lund Sweden Dr Cordingley was elected to an Arnott Demonstratorship for 1972 by the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England He delivered his Arnott lecture in December on the subject of 'The lung as an excretory organ' He continued his researches on the reticulo- endothelial system He continued to examine for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Council for Occupational Therapy and was additionally appointed as an external examiner for the Society of Chiropodists Dr Brown who replaced Dr Hobdell at the beginning of the session has established close collaboration with the Primate Unit of the Royal College of Surgeons at Downe where he is continuing his research into facial growth He was the local organiser of the International Associa- tion for Dental Research which held its meeting at King's College He participated in symposium at the Annual Meeting of the Periodontol- ogy Society at Edinburgh Dr Thornton has been investigating endocrine control of pituitary hormone synthesis and is taking year's leave of absence to continue this research at the University of California Davis Dr Firth who joined the department during the year is engaging in neuroendocrine research
