Iviii Annual Report of the Delegacy work for the Fire Research Station and has been given grant from the Department of the Environment to work on spalling of concrete under high temperatures Professor Gibson has continued to work in collabor- ation with the Building Research Station on non-homogeneous elastic media and its application to problems of soil structure interaction The design of foundations for exceptionally tall buildings in London has been studied The Department has acquired an Olivetti TE300 terminal which is linked directly with the KC TALK system providing remote access to the ULCC6600 and 7600 computers In addition acoustic coupling equipment allowing On-line' access to other computers has been installed We now possess trace treading equipment which will facilitate data preparation in most fields of research pursued in the Department The link between the Department of the University of Delft first established with Professor de Josselyn de Jong as Visiting Professor has been maintained and we have been glad to have Engineer Kruijtzer with us during the session Another distinguished visitor has been Dr Peter Brown of the University of Sydney who spent the whole session with us research student employed full-time with Taylor Woodrow Construction Limited has been registered under Dr England making use of the Industrial Research Laboratories Scheme for the first time This is similar to the co-operation we already have with various Government Research Establishments and we welcome the opportunity that it provides Students in the Faculty may now select their pattern of studies from wide range of options including Law and Industrial Administration In the future more attention will be given to Management Studies and Dr Dixon will be absent from College during 1972-73 taking an advanced course at the London School of Business Studies further lectureship in Management has been approved by the College An interesting form of exchange has been arranged with the French Engineering School Ecole Centrale des Arts and Manufactures Paris whereby some of our final year students will spend part of the year in Paris and some of their students some time with us It is hoped that the connection may be further developed Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering This has been year of change for the department both in key administrative positions and in emphasis for teaching and research Dr Charles Turner was appointed Siemens Professor and Head of Department bringing with him research interests in microwave acoustics superconducting devices and computer applications Mr Giannini was appointed Chief
