Annual Report of the Delegacy lvii City for the month of March 1972 to give course of lectures on soil mechanics at the National University and to address number of professional engineering groups He also lectured at Cambridge University Dr Illston was invited as Visiting Scientist' to lecture and give research seminars at the University of Calgary Alberta during two-week visit in April 1972 and he also lectured on the Advanced Concrete Technology Course and the Movements in Concrete Course at the Cement and Concrete Association Dr George England attended the 1st International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology in Berlin during September 1971 He presented two papers and was co-author of third Dr Doug- ill was awarded the Ph as student of Imperial College and was elected Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers Dr White was elected Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Dr Jefferis was awarded his Ph number of distinguished visitors gave seminars in the Department including Professor Edward Brand of the Asian Institute of Technol- ogy Bangkok Professor Colin Brown an old student of the Univer- sity of Washington Seattle and Dr Munro of Imperial College An outstanding series of University lectures was given in March 1972 by Dr Laurits Bjerrum of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute These were attended by staff and research students from all over the country and by practising engineers in the London area with whom the depart- ment maintains the closest links One of our final year students Stanley Ridley was awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers' Medal and Premium in competition with students from eight other Colleges and Universities in the London area This event has taken place annually since 1947 and we have had ten awards which is more than any other College Fundamental research at high level continues in the Department Dr George England was awarded grant for research into the relation between characteristics of cement hydration products and their engineering properties and this work will use facilities and equipment both at King's and Birkbeck College where there is scanning electron microscope further grant has been awarded to team in the Department led by Dr John Dougill for work on strain softening of concrete rock and soil Dr Dougill has also been invited to carry out Dr White was invited to attend the Internationa Symposium on Mathematical Modelling Techniques in Water Resources Systems in Ottawa Canada in May 1972 and then went on to the Universities of Montreal Toronto Cornell and the City of New York
