Ivi Annual Report of the Delegacy Warwick joined the staff of the Department in January as successor to Professor Hirst who had been elected to the Chair at Cam- bridge At the end of the session there were two retirements Miss Laura Parish Lecturer in Education since 1947 is succeeded by Mrs Margaret Brook Professor Beales appointed permanently to the Department of Education in 1935 is succeeded as Head of Department by Professor Kenneth Charlton formerly Lecturer in Education in the University of Keele and Professor of the Philosophy and History of Education in the University of Birmingham FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Number of Students Sc Eng Part Part II Part III Postgraduate Faculty Notes Civil Engineering The Department of Civil Engineering embarked on the new session with new head of department Professor Kevin Nash who took over from Professor Ross whose retirement was announced last year Professor Nash has been at King's since 1946 He is known as specialist in soil mechanics and is currently Secretary-General of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineer- ing The established Readership in Civil Engineering has been filled by Dr John Illston an old student of the College and the vacant lectureship thus created has been filled by Dr Richard Bassett of Corpus Christi College who has been senior Assistant in Research of the University of Cambridge Dr Bassett's appointment strengthens the already strong soil mechanics group in College and we are glad to welcome back an old student 1956-59 In October 1971 Professor Nash attended the 4th Budapest Confer- ence on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and delivered the opening address and in May 1972 he attended the 1st Iranian Congress of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Shiraz and lectured on the design of slurries Professor Gibson was invited to Mexico 79 77 57 80
