xl Annual Report of the Delegacy in September 1971 Professor Nicol's inaugural lecture was given on October 26th 1971 and entitled 'Byzantium and Greece' DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS Number of Students Honours Classics 23 Honours Latin 10 Honours Latin and German Subsidiary Latin Postgraduate Departmental Notes Professor Maguinness retired from the Headship of the Depart- ment which he had held for 20 years He was Professor of Latin Lan- guage and Literature from 1946 to 1971 and during the past year has been Senior Research Fellow Equally at home in ancient and in modem European literature Professor Maguinness long since attained inter- national recognition as scholar His personal qualities in particular his tireless efforts on behalf of colleagues and pupils throughout his long tenure of the Chair are no less deeply appreciated During the session he attended as representative of Great Britain and of the Irish Republic the annual meeting of the Academia inter omnes gentes Latinitati fovendae in the Istituto di Studi Romani Rome in April 1972 He gave paper entitled 'Maffeo Vegio's continuation of Virgil's Aeneid' at the Auditorial meeting of the Classical Society in Trinity College Dublin in May 1972 Professor Barron who succeeded Professor Winnington-Ingram in the Chair of Greek in October gave an Inaugural Lecture on June 5th entitled 'The Noble Lie and the Politics of Reaction' During the session he lectured on 'Finding Lost Epic the deeds of Theseus' to conference of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools on Greek sculpture at the University of Kent on 'The Establishment of the Classical Ideal' at the University of Sussex on Classical Greek mural painting to the Leeds Branch of the Classical Association on the place of art and archaeology in Classical studies as subject taught in schools to conference of the Institute of Education He spoke at the annual dinner of the Queen Mary College Department of Classics He was elected President of the London Association of Classical Teachers and he
