xxxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy STUDENT ACTIVITIES Report from the Student Union As in past years 1971-72 was an active year for the Union Society at King's active that is in all the usual and well-tried fields and also perhaps more active in others than in past years The Union has over the year provided much of the social and sporting activities within the College for its 700 student members as well as some members of the College staff overcoming relatively successfully the traditional problems of being non-campus college and having to compete with central London and all it has to offer Once again the sporting prowess of King's students has been well to the fore The Rugby team as always represented the College well and despite losing at the Commemoration Games avenged itself in fine style by defeating University College on their own ground at the Foundation Games later in the season Football had another successful season ending the season at the top of the League with several notable victories to its credit The two Hockey teams did well also There was considerable resurgence of life in the men's Boat Club which at Commemoration Games distinguished itself by defeating University College in both the Eights events It also had good record for the rest of the year reaching the finals of the Winter Eights Regatta The Cricket Club despite an early season disappointment in the Cup went on to have successful season as whole going on tour this year to Yorkshire For the first time for many years King's was victorious in the annual confrontation with University College at the Commemoration Games an event which was celebrated long into the night and early hours of the following morning in many Halls and lodgings across London The rest of Commemoration Week was equally successful the highlights being the Oration given by Lord Caradon and the Ball at Quaglino's Restaurant The Union Society was also active within the College in ensuring that the best interests of the members were being served the year was however notable for two particular issues in this area The first was the Union's struggle to rationalise its financing and secondly its response to the Department of Education and Sciences Consultative Document on the financing of student unions This latter issue was discussed at meeting of great length attended by over 25 per cent of all students and left the Union with policy which allowed it to be active in negotiation with the Under-Secretary of State for Educa-
