xxxiv Annual Report of the Delegacy Frederick Denison Maurice who held the chair of English literature and history and subsequently chair of divinity at King's from 1840 until his dismissal on doctrinal grounds in 1853 Inter-library co-operation 14 Inter-library loans obtained for the use of members of the College numbered 074 made up of 640 items borrowed direct from academic libraries in the United Kingdom 107 borrowed from the National Lending Library for Science and Technology 20 borrowed direct from other British libraries and 227 borrowed through the National Central Library including 24 items from libraries abroad Unsatisfied requests for inter-library loans amounted to 295 or 14-2 per cent of all requests received As usual the College Library was called upon to lend fewer items than it borrowed the total of 360 being made up of 196 lent to academic libraries in the United Kingdom 153 to other British libraries and 11 to libraries abroad The lower numbers both of items borrowed and items lent reflect in some measure the inevitable suspension of many normal services to readers during the reorganisation of the Library at the beginning of the year under review 15 The College Library took up membership of the Ligue des Bibliotheques Europeennes de Recherche LIBER in the formation of which the Librarian himself had played not insignificant part The new body aims to establish co-operation between the research libraries of Western Europe which may be expected to become increasingly important with the expansion of the European Commun- ity it is sponsored by the Council of Europe Centre for Military Archives 16 Accessions to the Centre for Military Archives during the year included the gift of his papers by Major-General Sir Francis de Guin- gand the gift of those assembled by Lieutenant-General Sir Humphry Gale presented by his daughters and the deposit by their families of the papers of Major-General Sir Thompson Capper Lieutenant-Gen- eral Sidney Clive Field-Marshal Sir Archibald Montgomery-Massing- berd and General Sir Harold Pyman together with additional papers belonging to General Sir Ian Hamilton The Faculty of Laws deposited papers relating to the war crimes trial of Field-Marshal Erich von Manstein which it had received from General Ashton Wade
