Annual Report of the Delegacy xxi Professor Maguinness Born on October 12th 1903 William Stuart Maguinness was educated at the Belfast Royal Academ- ical Institution and at Trinity College Dublin which still engages his strong loyalty After holding posts in the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield he was appointed to the Chair of Latin at King's College in 1945 since 1952 he has been Head of the Department of Classics His service to the College has been long manifold and fruitful lucid and patient teacher of marked individuality he has devoted himself to promoting the interests of his students and of his younger colleagues being one whose deep sympathy with youth has grown rather than diminished with the years As Secretary of the Men's Common Room he made it his business to know all members young and old Maguinness' published work has been mainly in the field of Latin poetry notably of Virgil he is part President of the Virgil Society it is marked by sound traditional scholarship fine feeling for language and sense of poetry cultivated in the study of many literatures He is Hellenist at heart not less than Latinist and has made contributions to Greek studies At Trinity College Dublin he took his degree with joint honours in Classics and in Modern Languages His first published work was an edition of Racine's Berenice he has the enviable capacity to lecture in faultless French or Italian or in elegant Latin In France in Italy in Poland not less than in his native and adoptive islands he is admired for his scholarship valued for his counsel much loved for his warm humanity The Delegacy in bidding farewell to Professor Maguinness places on record their appreciation for his many years of service and their most sincere wishes for many years of happy retire- ment Dr Chapman sc ph Dr Frederick William Chapman came to King's College in 1929 as postgraduate student He joined Professor Sir Edward Appleton's research group in radio and atmos- pheric physics obtaining his Sc in this topic in 1931 and his Ph in 1934 He was appointed Demonstrator in 1931 Assistant Lecturer in 1937 Lecturer in 1939 and Reader in 1964 Apart from period during the War from 1940 to 1945 when he was seconded to the Ministry of Supply Research Department he has been continuously with the College He took over the leadership of the Radiophysics Group when Sir Edward Appleton left and since 1946 he has supervised the research
