xx Annual Report of the Delegacy The Hon David Smith was re-elected Chairman Sir Ivison Macadam mech was elected Vice Chair- man Mr Baird ll was re-elected Treasurer and served the College in this capacity until June 30th 1972 when due to increasing ill health felt obliged to resign Mr Fairbairn was elected in his place changes in the staff Retirements Six members of the academic staff retired at the end of the session Professor Beales Professor Τ James Professor Maguinness Miss Parish Dr Chapman and Dr Elliott The following tributes were recorded in the Minutes of the Delegacy Professor Beales Professor Beales entered King's College as student in the History Department in 1923 and became an Assistant Lecturer in 1932 In 1935 he was made Lecturer in the Department of Education During the evacuation of the College to Bristol 1939-43 the Department began tradition of service to the College as whole which was carried on by Professor Α Judges and after him by Professor Beales Apart from providing meeting place for various disciplines in the College they fostered good relations with the best London schools and thereby showed the College to those schools as desirable objective for would-be university entrants Mr Beales having been appointed Reader in Education in 1954 was made Professor of Education in 1964 and succeeded to the Chair of History of Education and the Headship of the Department in 1965 The Department became Faculty with himself as Dean in 1968 He has held together number of highly individual proponents of educa- tional theory as team by keeping the welfare of children as their primary concern His somewhat sardonic humour protects warm- hearted practicality and in College he has ever been ready to help in any activity intended to bring together staff and students of diverse interests backgrounds and faiths Few of his colleagues in his forty years on the staff have stood as effectively as he for the ideal of whole- ness which is at the heart of the College's purpose The College owes great debt of gratitude to Professor Beales and in bidding him farewell places on record their sincere thanks and best wishes for many years of happy retirement
