Annual Report of the Council ix audience with His Holiness Pope Paul Mr Hickling presented copy of new edition of Bede's Ecclesiastical History and received for the College Library the gift of facsimile edition of the New Testament part of Codex Vaticanus Mr Peter Adams was awarded the Philip Usher Scholarship for year of study in Greece old students The Reverend Canon Ralph Emmerson was appointed Suffragan Bishop of Knaresborough the Venerable Michael Nott Provost of Portsmouth the Reverend Caiman Chaplain to The Queen and the Reverend Canon Ghislain Emmanuel to be Archdeacon of Mauri- tius king's college hostel With student help in the serving of meals the diminishing number of resident domestic staff under Miss Bond's direction has maintained the usual high standard What cannot be controlled is cancellation of vacation lettings and the year's deficit is due to this cause even more than to rising costs Fees have been further raised for 1972-73 to Ā£252 st Augustine's college canterbury The third year began with forty-five students on the full course with two reading for the Th and with four living in the college but following the one year graduate certificate of education at Christ Church College of Education The staff consisted of the warden the Reverend Harvey the sub-warden the Reverend Kenneth Mason the chaplain the Reverend Kenneth Leach The Reverend Hugh May- cock continued to give invaluable help At the end of the year Miss Margaret Aplin retired with expressions of great appreciation from the college and the Council for her exceptional services in bringing the college into existence on the domestic side and maintaining it for the first three years During the year the course at St Augustine's was inspected by three Bishops' Inspectors headed by the Very Reverend Kenneth Haworth formerly Dean of Salisbury Cathedral The programme for the year
