158 Faculties and Courses of Study For the degree in Education by written examination and dis- sertation an approved course of study in one selected area is necessary taking at least one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study The Phil degree is awarded by examination on thesis submitted after period of supervised study of not less than two years Approved candidates may proceed to the Ed degree in Science Education after one-year full-time course combining the study of Education with advanced work in science subject Candidates for other higher degrees except the Ph must have good first degree the Graduate Certificate of Education or its equivalent and the Diploma in Education or an equivalent qualification or must pass qualifying examination of standard equivalent to the Diploma in Education Candidates with good Ed degree may also be admitted For the Ph degree candidates are expected to hold the Phil or or equivalent Higher degrees of the University of London are normally open only to holders of an approved first degree Intending students should first consult the regulations of the Uni- versity and then seek an interview with the Dean of the Faculty In the case of applications for entry in October these interviews are most conveniently arranged during the Michaelmas term of the previous session The course for the Ph can be begun in any term of the session Research fields include History of Education Comparative Education Philosophy of Education Sociology of Education Psychology of Education Science Education and curricular or interdisciplinary studies Full details of all these courses are given in the College post- graduate prospectus and the Faculty prospectus obtainable from the College
