156 Faculties and Courses of Study term they are in schools on five days per week Students are expected to carry out preliminary practice for three weeks in primary schools before the session begins THE GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION COURSE This comprises four elements as follows in addition to school practice General Education Theory-to be assessed by one 3-hour paper the only examination paper Principles and Methods of Teaching to be assessed by one long piece or three short pieces of work Foundation Options one to be chosen -Comparative Education Educational Psychology Health Education History of Education Philosophy of Education Sociology of Education-to be assessed by one long or two short essays Curriculum Options one to be chosen These are supervised courses of study assessed by essays or other approved pieces of work The options tutored at King's College include School libraries The teaching of skill in games Moral education in school Education 16-19 Reading in the Secondary School Interdisciplinary Methods in Sex Education Some courses are run on an Inter-Collegiate basis with the University of London Institute of Education variety of supplementary courses are offered and include classes in Speech Training the use of Audio- visual aids and other specialist materials related to the methods of teaching special subjects With the assistance of the Gulbenkian Founda- tion and the College the Faculty is also experimenting with mobile television recording unit to associate practical activities in schools even more closely with work done in College Opportunities are afforded for visits to various types of schools and for study in other institutions of the University Candidates reading Comparative Education are encouraged to make contact with educational institutions in at least one other country Comparative Research Unit analysing the educational and social needs of students aged 15-18 assists the study of rapidly expanding school population in Britain and Western Europe The fee for the course comprises all registration and tuition charges and the entry fee for the examination but excludes laboratory apparatus deposit for students taking certain subjects The Faculty is able each year to award number of grants from the Department of Education and Science for men and women
