Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxix Dr Lightowlers will rejoin the group in September 1971 after his leave of absence at the Bell Telephone Laboratories The radiophysics group Dr Chapman Dr LI Jones and Dr Barr continued its experimental study of the naturally excited resonances of the earth-ionosphere cavity The propagation constant of the earth-ionosphere wave guide was obtained by the analysis of radiation from tropical lightning discharges The properties of geomag- netic micropulsations and the nature of radiowave propagation in the 1-4 kHz high attenuation band were also investigated The activities of the nuclear physics group under the direction of Dr Griffiths and Dr Edwards continued to expand Expert- mental work was carried out on the UKAEA Variable Energy Cyclotron and new projects on neutron scattering and polarisation measurements are under way at Harwell Initial runs on the three stage Van de Graaff accelerator at Oxford University were successful Conferences visits lectures Professor Price lectured at Oxford Nottingham and London in addition to the overseas lectures previously mentioned Professor Domb gave papers at conferences in Manchester and London and also lectured at Bangor Dr Wilkinson gave papers at the Gordon Conference in New Hampshire and at the Univer- sity of Kent Dr Sherman gave papers at conferences in Rennes Sussex and London Dr Collins and Dr Davies gave papers at Manchester Cambridge and Rennes Dr LI Jones participated in several meetings in London and presented paper at the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Moscow Dr Griffiths attended the international conference on the application of nuclear techniques to environmental pollution at Salzburg He and members of his group gave papers at UKAEA Harwell Madison Bauff and Dr Sinha and Dr Stewart attended summer schools in Sicily and Banff Dr Sykes was guest lecturer at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and lectured on the Ising Model DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY Number of Students Undergraduate Sc Zoology 36 Sc Zoology Botany Total attending 10 course units run by the depart- ment 162 Postgraduate 17 Postdoctoral
