lxxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy the year the following should also be mentioned Dr Muller zum Hagen Hamburg Dr Ε Clark Florida Dr Lloyd Evans Cambridge and Dr Hyde Ghana DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS Number of Students Sc Broad-based 61 Sc Ancillary subject 51 Sc Major subject 96 Postgraduate 26 Departmental Notes The department had very active year during which more than 30 research papers were published and 40 conference and other lectures were given by members of the department at various universities and institutes throughout the world Professor Domb was awarded Royal Society Israel Academy visiting research professorship which he will take up from Jan to Dec 1972 In spite of the inconvenience of an outstation in Hampstead it was with some regret that the department gave up its teaching at the laboratory there This building was provided by the Halley Stewart Trust for research in physics and in particular for Sir Edward Appleton's ionospheric work It was opened by Lord Rutherford in 1933 Much of the research on the reflection of radio waves which ultimately lead to radar was done there Research Professor Price's group continued to expand the field of photoelectron spectroscopy and Professor Price gave invited lectures on this topic in Australia Japan the and Canada Dr Coniglio Naples and Dr Guttman Australia worked in the theoretical department as visiting postdoctoral fellows Dr Wilkinson's group made major modifications to their laser-Raman equipment resulting in highly superior performance and versatility Studies on hydrogen bonding in crystals the nature of melting etc were carried out Infrared spectroscopic studies of solids at extremely high pressures were undertaken by Dr Sherman Dr Collins and Dr Davies continued to study the optical and electrical properties of diamond silicon and gallium phosphide which are materials of technological as well as fundamental scientific interest
