lxxvi Annual Report of the Delegacy and field classes the fourth annual 'J Taylor Symposium' was entitled 'Experimental Petrology' and was attended by large number of staff and students from universities in the DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS Number of Students Sc Special 58 Sc Broadbased 51 Sc Ancillary 71 Sc Engineering 212 Postgraduate 52 Departmental Notes The academic year was overshadowed by the tragedy of Dr Tims' death by accident in February Dr Tims had been member of the department since October 1952 and had become one of its mainstays He was promoted to Senior Lectureship in October 1962 Dr Tims was true scholar quite outstanding teacher and valued and excellent colleague He is being missed by members of staff and by students alike Dr Tims was married in 1967 to Miss Jill White former Clerk to the Department and is survived by her and daughter aged one Professor Bondi resigned his Chair in Applied Mathematics which he has held since October 1954 upon his appointment as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Defence from 28th February 1971 His departure leaves great gap in the department Fortunately his connection with us will not be entirely severed as he has been appointed titular Professor of Mathematics in the College and it is in fact intended that he continue to give lecture course in the department Professor Frohlich was awarded Senior Foreign Visiting Scientist Fellowship for 1970 71 by the National Science Foundation and was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Arizona Tucson for the Spring semester 1971 He gave postgraduate course on commutative algebra in the University of Arizona and he addressed the Mathematics Colloquia in the University of Arizona California Institute of Technology at Pasadena the University of California at Berkeley Cornell University the University of Maryland the Univer- sity of Michigan at Ann Arbor and the University of Illinois at Urbana Professor Frohlich also gave postgraduate course on modular functions in the University of London and addressed the Algebra Colloquium in
