lxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy is grateful for the seven years that this great scholar performer and teacher devoted to it He created nurtured and brought to fruition one of the very best Music Departments in the United Kingdom and beyond its existence is his own best memorial After March the administration and general running of the faculty was taken over by Dr Trowell he also took over all Professor Dart's committee work both at University and College levels he was also appointed Acting Dean and Acting Head of Department The faculty received further generous contributions to the William Byrd Fund including two donations from America The Music Building at 152 153 Strand was inspected by the members of the University Grants Committee in May 1971 and the faculty was also 'at home' to visitors on the occasion of the Old Students' Recep- tion The faculty purchased more high quality gramophone equipment and continued to build up its Working Collection of instruments books scores and gramophone records It anxiously awaits decision con- cerning that part of the Working Collection which was on permanent loan from the late Professor Dart FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF BIOPHYSICS The numbers of students reading Cell Biology were 23 Undergraduates reading Biophysics numbered Three of these were Rumanian one studying under the auspices of the British Council and the other two under Rumanian Government scheme The department teaches students reading several other subjects within Biology and also students reading Physics or Chemistry The number of full-time-equivalent students taught in the 1970-71 session was 17 Twenty-three students were registered for higher degrees The first-year postgraduates who took the Postgraduate Course in Biophysics and Molecular Biology in the department were joined by 12 first year postgraduates from other Colleges within the University As recorded in last year's report Sir John Randall's successor as Professor of Biophysics and Head of the Biophysics Department is Professor Μ Wilkins previously Professor of Molecular Biology Sir John was also Honorary Director of the Medical Research Council Biophysics Unit attached to the Biophysics Department The Council is continuing support of Biophysics in the College at the same level as
