Annual Report of the Delegacy lxiii DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY Number of Students 255 58 Sc intercalated degree for medical students April 1970-June 1971 April 1971-June 1972 School of Biological Sciences 21 Ph 16 Departmental Notes The 8th international congress of biochemistry in Switzerland was attended by Professor Arnstein Dr Darbre and Dr Cannon Professor Arnstein also attended the 7th meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies in Varna Bulgaria in September 1971 At the international haemoglobin symposium at Bad Nauheim Ger- many in April he contributed an invited paper on 'Polyribosomes and ribosomal subparticles in haemoglobin synthesis' He also gave paper on 'Specific protein factors in the initiation of globin synthesis' at the Nucleotide Group Meeting of the Biochemical Society in Warwick in September 1971 Dr Darbre was invited by the Biochemical Society to speak at the Grammar School for Girls Deakin Leas Tonbridge in November 1970 On behalf of King's College he attended the sixth form conference on degree courses organised by the Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely County Council Education Department in July 1971 Dr Cannon presented paper on Some aspects of the modes of action of erythromycin and thiostrepton' to symposium on 'Molecu- lar mechanisms of antibiotic action' held in Granada Spain in June He again lectured at the Postgraduate Training Centre Harwell Dr Margot Kogut visited the Hebrew University Hadasseh Medical School Jerusalem from March to May 1971 as visiting lecturer to the Department of Medical Education and attended course on Animal Cell Culture at the Alton Jones Cell Science Center Lake Placid New York in August She was awarded research grant by the Social Science Research Council for Study of 'Educational and professional objectives in the teaching of Biochemistry to medical students' in association with Dr Beard University Teaching Methods
