Ivi Annual Report of the Delegacy resources continued Particular studies were devoted to reservoir control and model study of bottom intake structure was undertaken The first of the department's postgraduates to read internally for the Ph while working at an approved research institute was awarded the Ph It is noteworthy that the staff of research institutes are able to contribute in this way to the work of the department The staff student committee in the Department of Civil Engineering worked constructively Practical suggestions came from the committee and some were adopted by the College Notable improvements in the organisation of space proved to be one result of student participation Eminent practising engineers continued to respond generously to invitations to lecture in the department The College is very grateful to them Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering During the session Dr Ε Deeley was Acting Head of the department The staff remained one under complement during the session pending an appointment to the Siemens Chair of Electrical Engineering The department was fortunate in retaining the part-time services of Professor Jolly formerly Assistant Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at the Royal Naval College Greenwich Dr Deeley's work on precision speed measurement by non-contact means which is being applied in particular to strip steel measurements for the British Steel Corporation reached the stage where commercial prototype was to be manufactured and the possibility of extending the principle to other materials and processes was to be investigated Dr Lindsay's work on electron velocity distribution continued and small research group was established to concentrate on computa- tional investigations of fluctuations and noise in electron beams plasmas and superconductors with particular interest in non-linear effects Mr Boff began research programme on the effects of noise on radio frequency measurements and instrumentation Dr Deeley presented paper on 'Detection of focus and astigmatism by scanning methods' to the 25th anniversary conference on electron microscopy and analysis Dr Lindsay gave two invited talks on 'Microwave generation using cyclotron resonance interaction' at the Research Laboratories and on 'Plasma instabilities or growth-a new approach' to the School of Electronic Engineering Science University College of North Wales He served on the organising committee of the 1970 international confer- ence on gas discharges
