Annual Report of the Delegacy xlix Departmental Notes Professor Jones gave lecture on 'Don Quixote and the picaresque novel' in series of extra-mural lectures organised by the Courtauld Institute of Art another called "What piece of work is man"- Spanish prose fiction of the sixteenth century' at Trinity College Dublin and another on 'Fiction and the reading public in sixteenth- century Spain' at the annual conference of the Spanish departments of the University of Wales held at Gregynog Montgomeryshire Mr Rowe gave lecture entitled 'The oblique style of Juan Rulfo' at the Instituto de Espana London and another entitled 'Argue- das Indianism or Indian literature' at the Latin American Centre University of Liverpool Mr Nadal retired at the end of the session It is an under- statement to say that his ebullient presence will be greatly missed At party in June arranged in his honour presentation was made to him by his friends in the department and among old students whose affection was very manifest Mr Nadal has been member of the department since 1935 In addition to his academic work he was active in other ways For many years he produced the annual Spanish play Many of his productions are memorable and some have passed into Anglo- Saxon folklore We wish him long and happy retirement though not quiet one DEPARTMENT OF WAR STUDIES Number of Students Ph Phil 21 Defence Fellow 19 Diploma Departmental Notes The teaching staff of the department was augmented during the year by the appointment of Dr Dockrill as Lecturer and by the establish- ment of Defence Lectureship in the Ethical Aspects of War supported by funds made available by the Ministry of Defence Mr Paskins has been appointed to the post
