Annual Report of the Delegacy xii The Union Society through representatives participated in the visit to the College on May 25th of the The students were compli- mented by the on the content and presentation of their sub- mission which included reference to the urgent need for Stage 11 to the problems of student housing and to the problems associated with the refectories libraries and common room facilities Finally the Society continued to play its part in the decisions taken affecting the College community through its membership of the Delegacy and other committees The internal ballot procedure designed to secure wide franchise in the selection of student members of the Delegacy was well supported in its first year of operation In retrospect it was an excellent year all round for the Union Society The one problem however which exercised Union Officers consider- ably and which will continue to do so is that of the financial position of the Union Despite very careful budgeting the problem of making ends meet becomes increasingly difficult solution will have to be found to this problem for the future of the Union's important role depends on it II REPORTS OF DEPARTMENTS FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF BYZANTINE AND MODERN GREEK STUDIES Number of Students Postgraduate Departmental Notes In the middle of the session the name of the department was altered from Modern Greek and Byzantine History to Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies The department in conjunction with the School of Slavonic and East European Studies held nine-week seminar on the Greek War of Independence in the spring term Professor Nicol gave series of lectures on the late Byzantine Empire to the Department of Modern Greek in the University of Oxford and lectured to the Classical Association at the University of Lancaster He acted as external examiner First degrees and higher degrees are listed in Appendices and II distinctions and appointments gained by staff and students are listed on pages xxvi to xxxi
