xl Annual Report of the Delegacy the Gutteridge Cup and undertook very successful tour to Germany at Easter The Soccer Team was placed highly in the League as also was the Netball team The Men's Hockey team reached the final of the Cup and mixed hockey team enjoyed successful tour of Holland at Easter The Cricket team had one of its most successful seasons for while it reached the Cup final having beaten University College and King's College Hospital on the way The team also ventured overseas for its tour-to the Isle of Wight-which pro- vided fitting climax to fine season The continued lack of success of our teams in the annual fixtures against University College in the Commemoration and Foundation Games is thought to be purely temporary phenomenon The President's mixed football side which appeared in both fixtures was never rivalled for its overall attractiveness though it did lack that Amazonian quality required to secure just result The Commemoration celebrations again proved extremely popular The opening undertaken by the Principal was notable for the latter's introduction as the President's father and the revelation of his real military rank The Union Society was delighted to welcome His Royal Highness Prince Bernhardt of the Netherlands as its 50th Commemora- tion Orator as it was also to welcome Lord Chalfont as participant in the Commemoration Debate The Commemoration Ball at Quaglino's Restaurant was completely sold out The Union Society was concerned not only with encouraging humorous and good-natured social life but also with its own internal organisation and structure One example of its desire to give high priority to student community work was the institution of an Executive Committee member with full responsibility for this sphere of activity In addition the Union sought to make professional legal advice more readily available by setting up its own legal aid scheme The Union Society continued its active role in external affairs In this year's reconsideration by the Government of student grants the Union Society undertook to represent the views of its members in persuasive yet responsible manner including visit by group to the Under Secretary of State at the Department of Education and Science The Union Society welcomed the support given by the College administra- tion in these matters The Union Society continued to play energetic parts in the National Union of Students and the University of London Union always placing emphasis on the problems of student grants and housing
