Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxvii VISIT BY THE UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMITTEE On May 25th 1971 the University Grants Committee visited the College The party was made up of eleven members of the Committee headed by their Chairman Sir Kenneth Berrill In the morning they met representative groups of students and those concerned with student welfare including Wardens the Medical Officer the Chaplain and the Tutor to Women Students The Committee visited only one depart- ment the new Faculty of Music After lunch meetings took place with the non-professorial staff the Professorial Board and finally with the Delegacy The visit ended with dinner The topics discussed were varied including college government academic organisation student numbers staff student ratios buildings student accommodation accounts equipment academic success and failure rates and refectory problems All groups who met the Committee availed themselves of the oppor- tunity to raise any matters they wished and discussions were frank and free College Officers were present only at the first and last meetings of the day It is pleasant to record that the College heard unofficially later that the committee had been impressed by the maturity and common sense of those members of the student body whom they had met ROGATE FIELD CENTRE Report by the Warden The Field Centre continued to be used by visitors from London and from places as far afield as Manchester and Leeds large number of parties are booking for future visits year or more in advance In the winter months the Centre is under-used and as new brochure shortly to be distributed will indicate the fees are to be reduced during the period November-February in an effort to encourage the use of the Centre during this slack time The month of August another period of reduced pressure is used for the carrying out of maintenance work at the Centre There was considerable increase in the number of postgraduates using the Centre's excellent facilities for field work as shown in the table below which gives the numbers of visitors staying overnight during the session and in brackets during 1969-70
